You won’t want to miss them.

Girl Books, Boy Books, Gender Hooks: Packaging, Positioning and Reviewing in the Fiction Marketplace

Friday, May 30
11:00 am - 11:50 am

  • Rebecca Mead, Staff Writer, The New Yorker (Moderator)
  • Rachel Kahan*, Executive Editor, William Morrow
  • Deb Futter*, Vice President, Editor-in-Chief, Grand Central Publishing
  • Pamela Paul, Editor, New York Times Book Review
  • Jennifer Weiner, Bestselling Author, "Good in Bed," "In Her Shoes," "Little Earthquakes," and "Goodnight Nobody"

J. K. Rowling chose to use only her initials in order to broaden the potential readership of the Harry Potter series. Suzanne Collins kept her name, but the cover designs of the Hunger Games trilogy are decidedly gender-neutral. Dorothy Parker famously lamented, “Please god, let me write like a man,” and Nicholas Sparks, the reigning king of romantic women’s fiction, has mastered the art of writing like a woman. Disparate approaches to packaging and positioning of “girl” books and “boy” books and how all this affects sales, reviews, and readers has sparked an ongoing, sometimes heated, debate. Presented by Women’s Media Group, this panel will discuss the discrepancy between the number of books published by female authors compared to those published by male authors and what can be done to help even the playing field.
